Ok, so I have an 'emergency'. I just finished a big job and fancy a treat! But the emergency is that I need to buy something quick before I spend the money on less wholesome vices than collecting lovely tools!
I am torn between the highly regarded and well reviewed deros and the relatively unknown but potentially outstanding EVA150e....
The two packages I have found are....
Deros: Sander 150mm plate 125mm plate Intermediate pads for each 200 abranet discs (of my choosing) 4m antistatic hose T-loc
£399
EVA150e: Sander 3mm orbit Dust bag 100 abranet discs Classic systainer
£399
....so let's scrap this out!
I am always tempted to just buy Mafell as I haven't found anything they make to disappoint (thus far) but as I'm also buying the P1CC (after trying to cut some 2x4 along the grain....desperately....with nothing to hand but my Makita and wondering why anyone ever made or bought a jigsaw until now) I don't mind mixing a little yellow with my red. As long as I'm making the right choice!!!
Ok, enough rambling....
.....fight!!!
B
Oh, and this will be the only ROS I will buy for a long while and it'll be used mostly for timber and 2 part filler. Ta!

Hmmm I've yet to see either in person, but the Deros seems a better package IMO.

I happen to own a Deros and it's pretty great. Compact, light weight, excellent dust extraction, but I must admit it has a lot of vibration unless you turn the speed down a notch or 3. Unless you need the light weight and compactness of the Deros for, I don't know, vertical surfaces, ... I think the Mafell might be the better buy. The Deros is in fact so lightweight that on flat surfaces, bench sanding, you have to be careful that the weight of the dust extractor hose doesn't tip the sanding pad.
What kind of jobs will you use it for the most?

Unfortunately I don't have any experience with either than just seeing on shop shelf. My thinking is if doing a lot vertical sanding then the deros as the light weight. Then maybe the mafell if more horizontal sanding. Then next question I guess is do you go 3mm or 5mm

For the Deros, I don't see any problem going with 5mm if you use Abranet. You take off material faster and compared to sandpaper there's less, if any noticeable swirling. But opinions may vary when it comes to a topic like sanding

For the most part it'll probably be used for set building type work. Sanding filled mdf and paint finishes. But I'd like to move into more joinery work hence expanding my kit.
So....
I'll be using it in all sorts if surfaces at all sorts of angles.
Not wanting to state the obvious but dust extraction and low vibration are my biggest needs. Most of my work is in art galleries so dust gets me dirty looks and I've a bad hand from an old injury and vibration really aggravates it.
I have a worx vibrafree wu651 which I took a punt on as it was B stock and only £50. I think in the states it's branded by rockler. I was intrigued to see if it was any good....and it is! Extraction is good, vibrations are better than an old metabo I was using. I'd still use it for rough/mildly aggressive work but after spending a week at a friends shop and using his festool ets I really want some more refinement. Thus hopefully encouraging more refined work! The worx is quite noisy, the discs aren't cheap and I'd like something I can use two handed. I know this is only just possible with the deros but I think the lack of weight counteracts the lack of a dedicated second grip.
The hose is swinging it a bit more as I was looking at getting another hose anyway and it'd save me £150! [
To be honest I'm leaning toward the deros but as the Eva is so untested I'm keen to know if anyone's tried it?

I have the deros and echo all that Johnathan said. Seriously if vibration is a big issue i would look at the new festool sander. Same size profile as deros more or less but more solid and less vibration. Where are you based? Im in london if you want to try out my deros.

Not sure if this is exactly applicable to your search for the perfect sander. Have you considered the Mirka Ceros? I notice zero vibration and zero dust. You can literally drive it on the highest speed with one finger yet it is quite aggressive at removing material. I have sanded entire doors that had dark stain and a few coats of laquer on them in no time. I am guessing that you are aware of the Ceros and have already eliminated it from the running for one reason or another.
For the record I have quite a few worthless sanders- Bosch, makita, porter cable, rigid, and Dewalt 5" random orbitals, Festool RO90, Festool ETS125, and the Mirka Ceros. The Ceros is in a different league than the others.
Between the two you mention I would vote the Deros kit.

From what I read I assumed the deros is the successor to the ceros? I figured the vibrations would be similar but then you have the advantage of 2 size pads and no transformer. Maybe I'm wrong?
Jimbouk, which is the new festool sander you mention? And I'm also in london....hmmm.

I agree with lordbiscuit, as the successor of the Ceros, I have a hard time believing the Deros has more vibration. The Deros is basically a Ceros with the voltage transformer built into the tool.
Don't get me wrong the Deros has very little vibraion once I turn the speed down a 3 nothes, but on full speed it does. It's still better than the older ROS though.
As for the Festool, I haven't handled it yet so take this for what it is, but I'm sceptical it's any better than what Mirka offers. The quaity of Festool doesn't really convince me seeing their latest products, to be perfectly honest.
Anyway, just order the EVA150, Deros & new ETS and do a review for us and return the losers.

Anyway, just order the EVA150, Deros & new ETS and do a review for us and return the losers. I wish! The deros would be non returnable as it's a discounted package. Between the festool and the deros I'd go deros. The pad change is a great feature and for the money the package is better. The main reasons the eva caught my eye (other than I love red tools) is the decoupling feature, edge guard and the self extraction. Although the worx I have does this to an extent with it's cyclonic back box. It's pretty good as the ring makes a huge port for extraction but you still get dust from the very edges. I doubt it's as good as the eva but if I was stuck I could use it. Has no one bought the eva? Didn't realise it was that new. I might have to take a trip to D&M and see if I can try it out!

If I was you I would take jimbouk on his offer, of a demonstration of his deros and get in touch with dm tools as I believe they properly are your main mafell partner in your area or talk to Nathan at nma and he will be able to maybe sort you out with your nearest store and arrange a demo machine for a week or so to try. Then you can get to try both machines and see what you like and don't like of either machine.

Ok, so my impatience and panic got the better of me.... The mirka deal was running out so I had a good hard think.... The top selling point of the eva to me was the built in extraction. Then I realised that the only time I can't get a vacuum somewhere is probably the same time I wouldn't want to be holding a larger sander. And those moments are few and far between, and for those I can revert back to the worx if I HAD to. The second point was the vibration but I think I'm being unrealistic to imagine anyone has built a totally vibration free sander (but if one of you buy the eva and tell me that Mafell actually have I will certainly give myself a small kick in the shin). The edge guard I can live without, maybe I'll make one, or a spacer to fit the workpiece, or just be careful like always... So I bought the deros. It was too good a deal to miss and if I was paying full price for the kit (£499) then I'd be even more indecisive!!! The changeable pads and weight really swung it. I'll be sure to let you know what I think of it. Cheers for all your replies and cheers for the offer of a trial jimbouk. And if anyone buys the eva can they keep it to themselves for a month... ?
