While I don’t know most of you personally, I have to tell on myself. I now have a wife and a mistress. My mistress’ name is Erica and she moved in with us this past Friday. Currently she is set up and resting comfortably in our garage as my wife says there is only room in our house for one woman.
Humor aside, I wanted to take some time to share my unpacking and setup experiences.
The boxes arrived with a few gouges in them, but I noticed no damage from these gouges. There are a few defects that I must work out.
1. The side extension table did have a small divot in it and several small scratches. The packaging appeared to be directly from Mafell, so these defects are from the manufacturer.
2. The legs had some scrapes on them as well, again I’m sure from the manufacturer.
3. Depending on how firmly I ground the bevel knob into the 0 stop, the blade can come to rest at up to 0.5 degrees off zero, I’ve not checked the 45 degree stop.
4. The imperial ruler on the saw is off by almost 1/8”, I cannot accept this on such a costly tool. The ruler is crimped in to the channel, so drifting it is probably futile. I rarely rely on built-in measures, but I do expect better tolerances for the cost.
5. While not a defect, I was not impressed with the supplied literature. I’ve received more comprehensive instruction from tools that literally cost 1% of the Erica.
I am impressed with the following:
1. The sturdiness of the cabinet.
2. The MFA stops
3. The micro adjust on the cast iron fence
4. The cut quality
5. The dust collection is really good without a vacuum and darn near perfect with a vacuum.
I am wondering if anyone has suggestions on restoring the table finish over time. I believe the top is pretty soft and I can see if I do get significant scratches they may transfer to my work. I have used an RO sander on my iron top cabinet saw (I bought the saw used and very rusty). The RO restored the top to near factory finish, but I’m thinking that method is far too aggressive for the pebble aluminum finish.
I would like to employ a light duty router for round overs and chamfers, but nothing too aggressive. I’m thinking my Bosch 1617 EVS for the motor. Does anyone know if the Mafell router plate is universal? Cost?
Other than a few test cuts I haven’t done any production with this saw yet. I’m looking forward to it.
