But the kss80 still wont cut 4" in one pass so I would go for the kss400 and the mt55, the 80 must be one heavy mother.

I think that in the end you need them all -- they all have a purpose and excel at one thing over the other and if you want the best of everything, having the right saw for the application is the way to go, and of course will cost more money. Funny how agonizing a decision this all can be when in the end I am sure that I will be thrilled with whatever saw I get and I will still want the ones I do not yet have.

I went from one ts55r to kss300/400 mt55 and a cordless ksp55, it is nice to have a saw for every occasion, for the bigger stuff I use my mates hammer saw.

Thanks for your help, everyone! I spent some time talking to David at Timberwolf about the virtues and differences with all the saws. I think that as others have said, look to 70% - 90% of what I will be using it for and start there...so, that would push the needle toward the KSS400 or MT55 or maybe I will just get both of them for close to the cost of the KSS80. I have some more pondering to do on this for sure, but love the thoughts and insights from everyone. Keep it coming if there is any new angle not addressed. Thanks!

Do the KSS 400/300 have soft start or do they have a little kick? Asked the same question on the KSP thread too. Thanks

Do the KSS 400/300 have soft start or do they have a little kick? Asked the same question on the KSP thread too. Thanks The KSS 300 and KSS 400 don't have a soft start per se. That being said, they have a pleasant start up, not at all harsh, a real pleasure for all day use! :-)

As others have said the 400 and 300 don't have soft start or a motor break. The kss400 36v does have a motor break

Keep going back and forth between the KSS400 and KSS80...each has pros and cons. How many folks own and use the 770 track for the 400?

I own the 770 track. I have only really used it when installing particle shelving for custom closets/pantrys. It feels more natural on the saw than I expected. When installing shelving the walls are usually out of square slightly-makes it fast to just make two marks and keep a thumb on the track.
Almost as easy/fast with a short track and any other track saw though but it does offer a nice little advantage.

I own the 770 track I use when I'm doing chipboard flooring. Simply as it allows me pick up the saw and track together and cut in one fell swoop. The 770 track does no fit the 80

The bosses son had a shot of the saw today. He was like that's far too easy I need to get myself one of them. I didn't tell him the price as I didn't want to frighten him

I think festool might have lost a sale cause of me. The Window fitters where on site today fitting the windows today. There was a slight technical error with one of the Window openings and to get around the problem it had being decided to put a mullion between the side windows and the door. Anyway when I come back with the bits of wood cut. He spied the saw and was asking to see it and wondered how it attached the rail and didn't fall off. So I showed him how it all worked. He was telling me he had being looking at the festool and was thinking of getting at the open day next week. By the time I had finished showing the saw and what it could do all the uses it has with crosscut rail. He was like you've really got me thinking now. He was really impressed with how it all worked and how much can be done with one saw and how easy it is operate and so simple

Very cool. I am really like the KSS400 capabilities, but I am also really liking the KSS80 and all that it has to offer. Such a tough, tough choice to make between the two.
