This year being my 40th I decided to enter the granfondo stelvio santini which takes place in Italy and finishes on the top of the stelvio pass which is one cycling iconic climbs. So at months of training the day arrived and it was time to go and climb some mountains. At the start was basically all down hill to for the first 35 miles. With speeds of 55mph being hit then the work would begin first the teglio which was a good 25 minutes climbing. Then through the vineyards and to the or mortirolo which is pure nastiness with an average gradient of 19% over 11 km and rising to 25% at the top. Then a race to bormio to make the cut and start the climb up the stelvio rising to 2800m let's say it was truly epic day and all pain was worth it. Here are some pictures of the day

Oh my life - kudos. What an achievement. Remember seeing a bike in one of your photo's, and thinking that's looks interesting; thinking you obviously like a spin - maybe a Sunday run or two. In fact I'm awestruck almost speechless. In your shoes, I'd be so proud and pumped up. Congratulations.

Fantastic! What a ride.
I just recently learned of "L'Eroica" and you've just inspired me into thinking that would be a good goal for my own rapidly approaching 40th.

I rode the raid pyreneen on a 60s bike with wide tyres, thick wool shorts with a ex-brittle leather chamois and a merino and cotton jersey. Basically it was what would have been used in competition in the old days. It was all surprisingly practical and frankly more comfortable than it would have been had I gone for the super streamlined modern tour-de-france kit. The term for this frame of mind is 'retro-grouch'. Retro-grouch is the cycling equivalent of the woodworking 'neander'

My 40th year as well. Been back into the martial arts 6 nights a week. Thus my diminished presence of late. Nothing as cool as this race though Aaron. Thanks for sharing

Why not. Hang it right over the fireplace to impress the ladies. (which cost more, the bike or all your Mafell toys combined ?)

... (which cost more, the bike or all your Mafell toys combined ?) ... the hospital bills... That said, the Stelvio ride looked pretty awesome, and I can see how one would want to be 'innit'.
