Thanks huntsgemein , I found one on ebay last week, thanks to our Kiwi-bruss across the ditch @aloysius . Was in the the US as a 220v plug in a classic systainer. ebay said it shipped today. Now I need to order a sanding frame for it. Looks like it will be about 30% of the Au retail price, including a Neutrik PowerCon TM TrueOne TM for the end of it, and including a new frame. The next drama is whether to order 620 belts or switch the mechanism to 610-mm. (This is a classic example of a 1 st world problem)

Congratulations! What a score. What a great price too.
I won't presume to offer any advice in your dilemma. I will go through my own train of thought instead. Mine was a German model, so the only changes required was a change in plug end. The 3 belts (Wurth) supplied were 620 in length, & had beautifully crenelated, butted & taped diagonal joins. I'm not sure if Festo/ol Oz offer similar ones, but I'm aware that it's just about the only local source of this particular length. The butted & taped belts have a lovely seamless joint, lacking the classic "thump thump thump" characteristics of lapped jjointed ones. They theoretically should provide a smoother running, more delicate action. However for me sourcing any type of consumable from the Oz importer is a convoluted, ludicrously time consuming nightmare that I'd personally far rather avoid. Not to mention the rather dubious ethics involved in Resale Price Maintenance, the bullying tactics imposed on the retail network, and other nconscionably inflated prices. Personally, I'd far sooner crawl a mile over shattered glass than enrich this particular contemptible, detestable mob.
For me, the course of action is clear: change over to the much less expensive, much more readily available Flexovit 610 mm belts. This way, I can source basic grits (40-180) at a moment's notice from the local hardware, and more specialised ones (24-400, aluminium oxide etc) at short notice. My last paper order from Festo/ol Oz took over 3 months to fulfil!
