Hi - I've just got an MT55 kit (in the U.K) and already amazed at the quality of the build and the cuts it makes. I am looking at options for extractors and really want something as small as possible as vehicle space is limited. I am also not too worried about conforming to the highest class as I am not regularly making repeated cuts all day long - but a small unit to take the dust from the port (and the job) when I need it will obviously be a good thing. The main thing for me is having a good firm connection between hose and port. With this in mind I'd like something cheaper than mafell/festool/fein and on the smaller side. Can anyone recommend a unit that definitely fits (with or without an adapter). Another thread on here seemed to suggest Bosch and metabo extractors fit snugly. I've often seen guys with Henry hovers gaffer taped to their festools, though I've seen someone selling an adapter on eBay specifically for this marriage! I wonder if that would work on the mafell? I know Henrys are not at all proper dust extractors but their size and minimal cost is quite appealing. Any leads much appreciated

If cost and fit are your primary concerns, I would look at adapting a festool/mafell hose to a small shop vac-possibly a wheel less unit with a shoulder strap. I would do my adapting at the vac end to give me a nice snug fit at the tool end. I'm in the US and I've used festool hose on larger Ridgid vacs, not sure that crosses over to UK/metric.
Vac sys might be a nice fit if the price makes sense.

You could also try adapting a dust bag. Details offering seems most promising

Welcome, and congrats on the MT55 kit. I like Erik's suggestion of using a Bosch, Metabo, Festool or Mafell hose on a less expensive vac/hover. I know this may not be in your budget but it sounds like the Festool CT Sys might fit your needs well, again as Erik already mentioned. At first I had a hard time justifying to myself the value of a high priced vacuum, now, I wouldn't be without one (or 5 in my case ). Laying out the money is hard but I fell it does pay off in the long run. Good luck, and be sure to let us know what you decide on.

Thank you all - good suggestions. Price is secondary to the fit and portability, so I will look at mafell hoses with a compact vac. The vac sys does look good for my needs. Will let you know how I get on and thanks again

I also have the Festool vac sys "don't want to sell though "in my opinion if you want to use this as a everyday vac you will get irritated as I do on continually emptying bag although it's excellent as a small extractor to do what I would call "little " jobs also it should have variable suction which it doesn't but it does have power tool take off which I believe is a must on a vac again just my opinion "don't want to offend " kind regards Gary

I have the ctl-sys. It ok. The dust bag needs emptying quite a bit as the suction reduces quite often. Anflike most of these tools. You have to pay extra for bits like: long life dust bag, attachments and i ended getting the sys-cart as its not convenient using the strap. So in all, I would of been better of with the CT range. I still use my Henry now and again. They are very convenient. Just make sure you the use dust bags otherwise the motor blows.

Thanks for the advice. When you used the Henry did you need to adapt the hose end to fit to the dust port on the saw? I like the idea of using the Henry as its so small

Dustless Technologies Wunderbag adapted to any large shop-vac. Dust down to .5 microns. Inside of vac won't even have dust on walls. Take some ABS coupling etc. to enlarge diameter of inside inlet port. Bags come in a 2 pack online. They're the same material that Festool etc. use.
As long as you haven't vacuumed up anything that nasty I will sometimes slit the bags open to empty debris, due to accumulated weight, and just hot-glue the quilted plastic back together air tight. The hot glue will melt into the bag so be fast and good (you apply it to folded over outside side of bags like gluing two hems together). I use a 3M temp controlled gun but you could also use some polyurethane caulking etc. to seal up bags and wait for it to dry. Never had any leaks doing this. If fact I use these bags for everything now since the vac runs forever with great suction.

Do any of you know if there are any competitors (in terms of compactness & portability) to Festool's CTL SYS compact vacuum extractor?
(No cordless; just mains-powered)

I know Makita has some older model extractors similar. Seen pics of a metabo one. On the cheaper side, I've seen in store, dealt and Milwaukee tool box sized extractors. Don't know about the hose size though

The Festool CT-Mini and CT-Midi are quite small and if you have the Mafell saw in a systainer, that systainer should attach to the vacuum on top, making a convenient way to roll around.
