Hi folx Being a nosey bugger i wonder what kind of wood you like to work with and why. It would be nice if you differentiate between Indoors/outdoors use.

I have not worked with Maple for ages, but I like the look of blond wood and tight grain. Jarrah is a local wood. I like the look, but it gives nasty splinters. The Mrs is fond of the pink and orange hues of pear. (I like it too).

Application and use determine the options.
Ipe makes amazing outdoor furniture and decks but mahogany is high on the list for the same applications. Red Cedar is a great option for siding and trim.
Interior is based on style and function. Maple for paint grade as I find poplar to be far more work to finish. I use a lot of clear Alder since its cost affective and can take stain and finish well.
My personal favorite is old growth Doug Fir and Heart Pine.

Interior - US Black Walnut & US Black Cherry (preferably from the NE vs the Midwest)
Exterior - No current favs. If you can afford it, Teak is first rate (I can't afford it). Used to be Mahogany, too costly nowadays. Ipe is great for decks but i find milling it too unpleasant to use it for furniture. The cedars available locally are too soft.
I'll be making an outdoor bench this winter, still undecided what to use.
