My Dup Doweler DD40F is the lamest machine I have ever bought. Since it literally burns wood trying to make a dowel hole I decided to buy CMT bits as replacements. The CMT bits are no better and I even took an original Mafell 8 mm bit and put it in a cordless drill and it barely drills so there is a problem. Solutions?

Make sure you push on the end of the machine, with your hand 'palm up'. Imagine Spiderman shooting a web, was how it was once explained to me! Push reasonably fast, but steady - much faster than you plunge a domino. I've never had a problem with any size bits, in hardwood or softwood. (Or MDF etc)
