Does the drill plunge down on the rails? or does it crank down by using the threads on the one rail? How does it stay put where you position it on the wood? And also, I think you might need a longer drill bit to get through that beam

Does the drill plunge down on the rails? Yes, it plunges by way of the smooth guidance shafts on either side. There is an adjustable stop collar for controlling depth. The bit is a self feed auger, so it basically self feeds through the timber. or does it crank down by using the threads on the one rail? How does it stay put where you position it on the wood? Good question. For a small amount of drilling it it very easy to precisely position the auger point on your mark. For larger amounts of repeated drilling it is worth making a template. We've made templates two ways. 1) we've taken 1-1/8" t&g ply and drilled holes where needed and then overlay that on the timber and insert the bit in the template holes. 2) we've also used the retractable pins located on either corner of the base that fit nicely into predrilled template holes. This method is most precise.
Not sure if you can tell in the photo but the base tilts and having a long bit allows you to drill at an angle through timbers for wiring and connecting bolts. And also, I think you might need a longer drill bit to get through that beam Yeah, looks a bit silly doesn't it? This drill is extremely powerful also, two speed gear box and variable speed motor. Drills 19mm holes through knots like they weren't even there.

As I understand. Timberwolf will bring in anything from the mafell catalog

I'm almost positive garch is from the U.S. and he has it. He has had a lot of his Mafell tools when people were buying form the dealer before Timberwolf.

That's a very cool looking tool, garch. We own a tool that looks very close to the stand/plunge system shown in the top photo of the original post, but this tool looks like the motor is integrated into the tool. Is that correct?

I'm not sure where Garch has been lately. Sure hope he comes back to participate. Really enjoy his posts.

In other words, he owns some pretty cool tools.

Can anyone comment on the ZB400e or the different bohrstations? I'm looking at some kind of drilling capability through oversized beams.

Me too!
And ... I am thinking if getting the one where the drill goes into it, rather than the one weigh the drill as part of it. I think a 44-mm drill bushing.

Yes, but my question is more at the Kindergarten level... What would one want the motor attached, versus one that holds a separate drill? I am thinking if I was augering the a high torque low RPM. Sort of like a concrete mixer versus a paddle in a drill.??
