I was hoping the MUF community could help me with some questions around dust extraction. I noticed in this MUF post where user aas mentioned they successfully connected a Festool CT-VA-20 preseparator to their Starmix iPulse H-1635. I wanted to learn more about this understanding how it was accomplished and was hoping aas and others could kindly advise. I'm interested as I just purchased a Starmix iPulse H-1635 Safe Plus and may wish to connect the Festool CT-VA-20 preseparator for some projects that require me to sand gypsum plaster. Most notably, here's the quote from aas at the above link: Mine came with the systainer rails, the CT-VA clips on top. I have the 35mm Starmix hose, I removed the Starmix bayonnet fitting and fitted the Festool angle fitting that came with the CT-VA - it is also the right size to plug straight into the vac, so I can use with or without the seperator.Based on the above, my questions are: - Did connecting the Starmix to the Festool work out of the box?
- If not, did you have to purchase any additional accessories and if so what were they?
- If not, did you make any custom modifications to the hose, connector and if so what were they?
- Finally, I'm going to be doing some sanding of gypsum plaster and was wondering what advice you have? Plastic sack of fleece bag? Use the Festool CT-VA-20 or not?
I really like the option of having a pre-separator and want to ensure that if I do purchase it, it is money well spent and does indeed work well without being jerry rigged. Thank you for your time! Much obliged

1 - Yes, just change the angle connector supplied with the CT-VA-20 with the bayonnet connector on the Starmix hose 2 - None 3 - None 4 - Not so easy to reply - how much sanding of Gypsum?.. i.e. is this your full time job, or just a few weekends here and there? If it's not too much sanding, stick with the Fleece bags and protect your expensive filters. If you will be doing a lot, it works better for this sort of work (plaster, concrete) with the black sacks... but even with the Autoclean, at some point you will need to clean out the filters - I use a second vac for that, you don't really want to be getting an airline on it and blowing that fine dust everywhere. Separators do not work perfectly in every situation; I'd say use the CT-VA-20 with fleece bags, but I'm sure there will be other advice against this. The fleece bags protect the filers, make it easy to change bags, but you also will have to empty the separator. Festool sell bags to go in the CT-VA-20 for this - I don't bother, I put on proper 3M breathing mask (can't think of the word in English - with the twist on modules) and empty the bin into a waste sack.

Hi aas Thanks for the detailed reply. I am not doing this for a living and am not a professional. I am just doing some renovations to my home and would prefer to buy the tools and do the job myself rather than pay a professional and be without the tools. From time to time I am doing some drilling and light chiseling in concrete. In about 2 years I expect the Starmix vacuum to be used in a workshop for woodwork. The sanding of the plaster is for the walls of my downstairs hall, the wall up the stairs and walls on the landing (upstairs). I may do some of the bedrooms rooms in future but not now. In the grand scheme of things, it's not a lot - probably many hours work rather than many days. What I am trying to understand is the best setup. Based on the above, is the best thing for me to do to get the Festool CT-VA-20 and the fleece bags? I take it these Starmix fleece bags (434988) are fine provided I don't try to do any H class related work (ie: M and L related dusts are OK)? I bought some of the Starmix black sacs with the vacuum just in case but I can also order the fleece bags. I assume I have to turn the collar on the hose when I'm using the fleece bag, irrespective of whether a preseparate is attached? Finally, regarding what you mentioned "Yes, just change the angle connector supplied with the CT-VA-20 with the bayonnet connector on the Starmix hose" Is it as easy as unscrewing one connector and replacing it with another? I surprised if so and just want to be sure Your commentary on the cleaning the filters is insightful. I also use a 3M half face respirator with 2135 P3R particulate dust filters fitted and sealed goggles.

It's almost not worth getting the CT-VA if it's not for pro use. It's not cheap - I'd say get fleece bags and be done with it. Doing concrete grinding, I can fill a 7€ fleece bag in less than an hour - it makes sense for me. If you want to go down the same route and have the space to store the CT-VA - OK, but it's not a necessity.
For the connectors, I've forgotten exactly, but it was a quick unclip and unscrew, and then push the hose into the Festool connector.

Thanks aas. I'll start with the fleece bags. It should be obvious if I need the CT-VA-20. I really appreciate your help here and level of detail. You may very well have saved me several hundred Euro

Just to follow up aasI bought the Festool ETS EC 150/5. I didn't get around to doing this until last May due to parts shortage. As you can see, I took my time to finish the wall. The sander works very well with my Starmix iPulse H-1635 Safe Plus which uses Starmix fleece bags just as you recommended. There is very little dust. I ended up using the Starmix adapter for connecting to the sander. I just used a knife to cut the right sized hole. Thanks again for everything, I am grateful.
