Hi,
I have watched the german videos to learn what I can but I am using 19mm MDF with 8mm bits. What settings should I be using to get a perfectly smooth joint? I have only just received my mafell device and am exctited about using it a lot more. I just need to learn a bit more about it. Any tips are appreciated, thanks.

It depends where the 1mm gap is - perhaps you could be a bit clearer. If it's between the mating parts, maybe you are not plunging deep enough.

Sorry yes. It is on the outside. I have got the depth part sorted and that is fine. I just do not seem to get perfect 90 degree corner. I have a slight overhang. When I measure the material with a digital caliper the dowell joint is about .3 of a mm off center. I was unsure if I need to change something to make it more central or if I am just doing it wrong.

It should be spot on - I would suggest you are doing something wrong.
For standard 19mm board you register off the base - I'll explain...
Find a smooth top to work from, lay the DDF40 perfectly flat on the base - for the end dowels you lay the panel flat with the outside of the join facing down towards your top; for the side dowels, you stand the work up at 90 degrees with the outside facing away. As both pieces have been drilled while flush to the base of the doweler - you cannot have any offset.
Once you can understand the concept of this and get repeatable results, you can try doing the side dowels using a stop block and laying the panel flat - the end of the panel and the base will be up against the stop block - so the base will always be te point of reference.
I'm pretty sure there are YT videos on this.

Maybe pictures will help. Make sure to register from the same side. The holes don’t have to be centered. If they are 10 mm from one side and 9 from the other side it’s fine. Just make sure to line up the correct sides. I think we all have made this mistake.
In my domino I had an issue where the base was not centered with the motor so the slot was a different distance from the left edge/pin than from the right. Hopefully you get what I’m trying to say. If that is the issue, it is probably not your mistake.
