Is the only difference between the classes of vacs the type of filter? Could I fit HEPA filters to my L class vac, or would it be pointless, because L class are missing some other function? Thanks, Lincoln.

lincoln , the s25 vac can use the Hepa filter . The overall suction will be reduced with the hepa filter . AS far as the different classes of filtration L,M,H.....the machines are different , the internals on the M and H class have a audible and visual alarm system in place to warn of clogs and full filter bags .

Thanks Joe. A small loss of suction wouldn't be a problem with this vac, it's unbelievably powerful compared to others I've owned/used. The S25 has a visual indicator, but no alarm. Must be to satisfy HEPA use regulations?

Must be to satisfy HEPA use regulations? Unlikely. None of the Festool vacs have any advanced flow sensing capabilities, and they rap on the HEPA thing real hard.

The Starmix vacs are all rated for Germany and Europe , the HEPA class filters are used on the Asbestos removal rated vacs .This PDF link should show the features and flow rating for the Starmix vacs............ STARMIX . Purchased a HEPA filter for the Mafell S 35 M , used for the final clean up on house builds .

"FlowDetect - Health protection: The flow sensor checks for a minimum air speed of 20 m/sec and issues a warning if the air speed falls below this value."
According to Festool UK these flow sensors are on their M class extractors. In UK if working on site an M or H rated extractor has to be used, an L class isn't enough.
As far as I can glean from research there is no difference in europe between L and M Festool extractors, other than the 2 circuit boards necessary to differentiate between hose diameters and to warn of flow reduction. There was a couple or three threads devoted to this distinction or lack of it on the FOG. So here at least if the filters and everything remain the same, the ONLY thing you gain is a beep when suction drops below a certain level (important for working on site, but perhaps not all important if not?).
The Auto Clean models made by Festool (I guess this is their equivalent of the Starmix ipulse/Mafell S35M and Metabo ASR 35 M ACP) are something else again, from memory Festool say Hepa filters can't be used in these, as the filters are too fragile to withstand the agitation necessary to shake off accumulated dust - whereas the Starmix models can have Hepa filters installed?
I'm not sure if this is because of differences in US and European health and safety regs or something else. There are wiser dust extraction gurus :-) here, who could possibly answer this.
