Bought myself an early Xmas present today, from the Taunton Press (Fine Woodworking, etc) online sale - the oversize hardcover of 'The Workbench Book'. Hopefully it will inspire me to build my own traditional style workbench. I haven't actually seen this book, but have browsed their 'The Toolbox Book' in a bookshop a few years ago, so I know what to expect. These books go for 'silly' money down here usually, so was very happy to pick this one up for what I would consider a bargain price.

Nice, it's a good book, if a bit dated. Popular Woodworking recently released the revised edition of Chris Schartz "Workbenchs" which I found more usefull.

I need 'inspiration' to finish my home shop, at the moment. Work is extremely busy, so finding time to finish it is hard at the moment. I really want it done by xmas, so I can get stuck into some more pleasurable projects, whilst having my time off. I may never build a bench, but I find books like this provide general inspiration, and will hopefully spur me on.

I hear you, I too seek inspiration in books. Benches are a very personal thing, hope it moves you to make a bench that inspires you to do your best work.
Sorry for the hijack, thought I'd share this here. Several years ago I got divorced. At that time I'd been a professional carpenter for many years and an amateur woodworker for longer than that. When I moved out I couldn't afford both an apartment and a shop. The choice was clear, I slept in my rented shop and on nice nights in a van down by the river.
After the dust settled I realized that despite over two decades of woodworking the only piece of my own work I now owned was my hand carry tool box made of cheap plywood with finger joints. I had long desired a hand tool centric work bench and decided that now was the time.... So I made myself a simple work bench. Should have done it years ago, I use all the time with both hand and power tools.
Good luck with your build.

I love my bench, but it is so full of stuff that it is a task to clean it off to be put into use. But, it was a great project.

... Several years ago I got divorced. ... They can be tough. I could envision one loosing their workbench out of spite. There is a joke in the southern US. "Why does a man marry the same woman twice"? "To get his $hit back!"

Hey John - yes, it arrived a couple of weeks ago. Really like it, lots of great ideas, and inspiration. Have only had time to browse it, so far. Will have time to have a read over my Christmas break. Lincoln.
