I’m boring 10mm holes using my DDF into Baltic birch. I’m smoking the wood and burning the bits. As usual, I have to lean into the DDF but not more than usual.
what am I doing wrong

Hi Birdhunter. I assume you have experience with it?
Is something a first? Baltic Birch, 10 mm, the combination? How deep?
As burning usually is a result of dull and/or gunked up bits and/or to slow operation, I assume you are aware of it and have checked it.
You may try do drill in steps so the chips clear more easy.

Fairly certain, you meant too slow in plunging, not the drill speed, that causes burn... as it comes to Baltic Birch- meh! used to be really good quality timber, well matured stuff, like 20 years ago, these days "cooked" (dried) like the rest of the most of the timbers, barely better quality than softwoods. few weeks ago, had a call- job (3 year old), of vanity unit tops in 25mm Birch ply properly bee- waxed... 3-4mmm shrinkage on each side over 1.8m length and bowed like a boat on one side from tiny bit of moisture from under side... garbage and really nothing doable about it now...

I wonder, however, if there are noticeable differences between the DDF and DD40P or G since the rpm is significantly reduced on the DDF40.
