I am in Brisbane and I am looking to purchase a duo doweller for the workshop. The use primarily is to join a variety of timbers such as various Australian hardwoods and some timbers such as Walnut, Maple and NG Rosewood.
I simply need to strengthen mitre joints of small boxes with a timber thickness from 19 - 20mm.
I have a few questions though, and I am a bit reluctant due to the lack of product information here in Aus.
1. I am also concerned about the hole blowing out the otherside when making plunges through the mitre using a 30mm dowel. Can you adjust the approach height to the mitre, instead of plunging half the thickness of the timber adjust the plunge to say 5mm from the inside of the mitre in an attempt to avoid blowout from the other side.
2. I have been quoted through an Aus reseller $2050 AUD delivered including GST, does this sound reasonable, I do believe that it may be superior to Festool in terms of quality.
3. I own some Festool tools, should I consider a domino instead for the mitres, I have been told that domino requires a home made jig to adjust the hole closer to the inside of the mitre as drilling across half the thickness in the centre will blow through the other side. Thanks in advance

1 yes, everything is adjustable from dowel drill size to the depth and elevation 2 yes and no, the two have significant differences, both designed/build extremely well, hence quality isn't something you could predict 3 barely, if ever either is used on mitres, normal application for both is cabinetmaking, however domino does need straight plate for stability on end cuts, they are available at benchdogs.co.uk.
I'd say watch few review videos on both of them, before making final decision Like

Hi Tony I'm also an Aussie and I've agonized about selling my Domino and buying a duo as it seems to offer some improvements over the domino and it suits the way I do things. I was quoted by Rotho Blaas Australia Pty Ltd, an approved Mafell agent, a delivered cost of $2250.50 for the Maximax so I think you were quoted the Minimax. The Maximax includes some very useful accessories. The thing that worries me is the lack of presence of Mafell in Aus. No one stocks any Mafell tools and they have to order from Germany with expensive delivery charges and yet so many places stock Festool, in fact I'm not far from an authorized Festool service center. I've watched all the duo videos and I'm very impressed with its precision. I also make small boxes and the domino and duo will do the job of strengthening miter joints. The domino has a 4mm cutter which I have used to reinforce 12mm sock but I think you need a shim and the duo can go as small as 3mm and has more micro control of depth of cut compared to the presets of the Domino. As you can see its a tough choice and I'm still undecided. Let us know if you have any questions and what you decide.
Here's two of those impressive videos

Hi John, There is no doubt in my mind of the capability of the Duo, however with no autherised repair centres, little support other than an official distributer who imports on an individual basis. Just looked at the P2 Zeta which wasnt on my radar and they have a reseller (Lincoln Joinery) which seem to stock a fairselection. The knock down fittings look impressive on the Lamello and in theory achieve a sililiar outcome.
At this point it seems to me that the Domino may be the winner, a bit like the (Steven Bradbury Olympic Medal) where the winner is the one that presents at the finish line!
Regards Tony

I here you! The lack of local support is the main reason I'll probably keep the Domino. It is my favorite tool and I'm sure it will do the job

tomartomau that win vid... 🤣🤣🤣 Watching reviews etc, hardly anybody mentions Dowler being lot faster, than Domino in real life and costs running it being close to 0 as Beech dowls are next to free. Hence your video remark might end more fitting, than given credit for...
