What’s the difference between this and the kss. Just no track with it?

More or less. Not having actually handled one, I can't swear on it, but I'm pretty sure it's superficially similar to the KSS 50 in controls & layout, but lacks the crosscut rail of the KSS models.
As the X-cut rail 770 is listed as an accessory for both K55 & KSS50, it appears that the absence of the crosscut rail is the only apparent differentiating feature, & that it has the wherewithal (i.e. slot mouldings in the soleplate) to perform the same tasks.

I'm seriously considering this saw - can anyone confirm that it runs on the KSS400 crosscut rail? The info on this saw is a bit...sketchy.

No, the 440/770 crosscut rail. Mafell have confirmed that it does, so have ordered the saw.

...and Mafell were wrong. It doesn't ride on the KSS rails. Even though they show the rails as accessories in their catalogue. A mistake on their behalf, apparently. Have ordered a KSS40 18M, but I'm going to keep the K55 18M as well - it's built like a tank, has great balance and feels like it has plenty of power. It does ride on the F rails. So, I've sold my corded KSS300 and KSS400, replaced them with a KSS40 18M and K55 18M + a pair of Metabo 7ah LiHD batteries and charger.
