The "buried wedged dowel" is exactly what I was thinking. Might try it without glue and see how it holds.
Thanks for the "dapper" comment. I had long hair past my shoulders for 5 years and decided it was time for a change. Now its all about the handlebar stash!

I hope you told your wife in advance so she didn't think a stranger was in her house :-) Quite a change. I came home from work one day and my wife had a completely different look…I was actually really confused for about 10 seconds… it was really funny.
Do you buy your dowels from Timberwolf or do you have another source? I think I "need" the duo dowler.

The wife knew ahead of time.
I get my Dowels from Laurier Wood Craft. They are the "expansible dowels." I've been meaning to post a thread regarding Laurier Dowels so I guess nows a good time.

Okay, I'm just about ready to pull the trigger on a dd40. I was set on a domino, but finally decided on the DD. Earlier in this thread, someone mentioned that a dealer claimed that 3mm bits could be used on the DD40P. Has anyone tried that? I see that the chuck is 8mm on both so I would think it would work. Could it be that the 3mm's were somehow damaging the motor or running gears?

I don't think the motor knows the difference between a 5mm and a 3mm. My guess is it has to do with RPMs.
What is your plan with the 3mm?

I was wondering about the RPMs. The P is slower than the G, but I would think that would be okay. The only differences I see are the depth, the rpm's and the wattage. Even the weight is the same. Has anyone seen them together? Are the frames the same? I want the 3mm for shelf pins.

Its always ideal to have a higher RPM for small bits and slower for larger. My guess is that you will have to plunge slow with the 3mm.
I'm surprised that Mafell didn't put a speed control on the DD40. Then you could set the speed to the bit and plunge rate.

Yes, speed control would be good. I'd rather have a smaller unit and go slow with large dowells, than have a large one and go slow with small ones.(let's not read into that). Anyway..... I was initially planning on a 1010, lr32, and domino 500, but thought I'd be able to do it all with a DD. Now I'm not too sure. I guess I'll see if Timberwolf can get the "G". I probably won't need the larger dowels.

The DD40 combined with the guide is far better than the LR32 system. I would still consider the Domino but save up for the 700 if gates and doors were in the future. The real advantage is to have the Pin system to register from hole to hole and the 700 has that option. Although the older/original domino 500 had pins. That being the case I would get the DD40 and then look hard and long for a good deal on the older 500. If you didn't end up liking the the 500 you can always sale it and get your money back.

The Dealer i quoted earlier is located in Fellbach/Germany where Mafell was founded and is one of the oldest Mafell dealers in Germany, his father founded the company. He sells Mafell tools all over Germany and i absolutely trust him when he says thats the DD40p can handle 3mm. I have the DD40p but the smallest drills i have are 5mm, so i can't prove it...

I probably won't need the larger dowels. I own the DD40p for few month now and i can tell you that one of its major benefits is that you can work really FAST with ist. You don't just "drill" holes with it you "push" the drills in your workpiece very fast. I think you have to do it a few times to realize what i mean. So i think its much better for me to be careful with 3mm drills using it with the DD40p from time to time but i still can work fast and efficient with normal drills (6-16mm). If 3mm is your favorite drill size you should buy the DD40g...
