I am thinking I could replace a CMS with an Erika. Is that sensible? It's what I plan to do - get rid of the compound mitre saw and replace with Erika. With the HKC55 and a (non-sliding) mitre saw, all is fairly light and compact, and I have most mobile uses covered.

Thanx for your replies, guys. Dubble thanx to you, aas for replying twice to the same question I intend to use the KSS for general woodworking, i.e maintainance of our house, some crude furniture . As i said it's not that i'm unhappy with the Bosch, it's just that it's taking up a lot of space. And in comparison the KSS 400/ HKC55 appear to work extremly well. holmz: i'd prefer the Erika before the CMS-ts insert faiw. Or did you mean to be sarcastic? After replying I thought, I'm sure that's the same question I replied to on the FOG!

I think that the stops on a compound miter saw and the longer tables make it easier and faster to use than just the KSS. Now, the KSS is capable and great for so many things and is worth having regardless of whether or not you opt for a CMS later - it compliments it well and is so handy for so many other things. I have not used an Erika, but from what I have seen and read it is more than capable and accurate in a portable package. It is not a dedicated 1000 pound slider, but for accurate and portable I think it is tough to beat - of course it all comes with a price tag too, unfortunately.

The CMS is just too nice for quick repetitive cuts. I have the KSS400 and I wouldn't get rid of my 12" axial glide (well, I would downsize to a 8") but I like my 12" too much and will keep it in the shop.
It's like having the MT55. I love it, but it does not replace my table saw. (it's a bosch 4100 but I would like the Erika someday)
Can you get by with only one or the other, sure. But I wouldn't want to.

The kss saws eclipse sliders for certian applications but I would not say they replace them for all tasks. The guide bow has two bearing or registration points underneath it with a distance apart about 8" at 0 degress, greater when mitering, so pieces small than that distance need an auxliary brace. If you can get your hands on one, you'll see limitations for small pieces and left sided cuts but it is the versatility of the unit that far outweighs its shortcomings. As an end note, finish grade work is not one of its shortcomings.

erik: you're making a very good point about the size of the workpiece ,one i haven't thought about. Thanks for that. I'll probably get the saw anyway and keep my Bosch as well..

Hi! My take on the saw: i've been using it for decking, and with the dimensions of lumber i worked with: a delightful saw. Almost surgical off-cuts in 45mm / 195mm , mitred at 22,5 degrees. No really discernible change of pitch noisewise, even though the lumber was quite wet. I dig the mitre-rail but i don't care much for the 'ripping-rail'. It's a far shot from the Festool/TS55 + rail combo. Would some lubricant be in order? Dust-extraction is on par with the TS55, better than i need outdoors. One thing i can't fathom: what' s the stainless steel thingamayingy for? Looks like a parallel guide of some kind,, but it doesn't really guide below cutting-surface.. Spacer for above-floor? Facit: me happy customer.

Having used the saw now for a month, this is my facit: I'll keep my CMS, but only because i cannot get a good price for it. I build a deck and some planting troughs with only the KSS 400 and the mitred corners came out better than with my Bosch. If i could have only one saw, that would be the one.
