Guys,
Here is an interesting link to a video about Sam Maloof a woodworker that I took a weekend class from a long time ago and learned a whole lot about furniture building.
Let me know what you think.

Great video. Sam was a special guy. I had a chance to meet him a few years before he passed and he was a class act.

Walnut if I remember correctly. If you do it you better post pictures or I'll boot you from the forum...not sure how I'll do that but I will

My second attempt to do a Sam Maloof style came out very well and was made completely with my Lamello Top 10 joiner using double stacks of #6 biscuits. The photo was shoot in a dark room and since it's so dang heavy I haven't been able to move it around to get a better photo. It's made completely with Honduras Mahogany and the bottom door panels were resawn with a bow saw from a very wide plank. There was a complete frame and panel back that had to be modified when I had a 32" Sony XBR television that stuck out too far in back.

I am making chairs...in fact I have a rough shaped one done - I need to mount the spindles (which are made) and do lots and lots of finish sanding....I worked out lots of kinks with this first one so the rest should go better.

I should point out that all the rips were done with my Mafell KSS80 and I used my jogsaw and bandsaw for the other cuts. No table saw used - I thought that the KSS80 was just easier and more accurate to use when making the rough cuts and breaking down the 8/4 planks.

Jack - love the table. That is what I want to build. Did you make plans yourself or did Sam have them available? I have a general idea of what I need to do for the column and some of the joinery but it is hard to find good plans for the table anywhere - I think Scott Morrison has some available. Just curious.

MrToolJunkie,
I had the idea from my notes I took at Sam's weekend class and watching him make one. I did find the plans online one time so a Google search might give you what you need to get started.
Basically, You make a square center post and dado the four slots for the leg sections. I made a template for the leg profile and joined the curved sections with a twin dowel joint (I would do the joint today with my Domino Joiner) . I know that I have seen the details online somewhere and If I can find it again, I'll post it for you.
I have to say that after taking Sam's weekend seminar, he told us to call him if we had any questions. I did and I was astonished that he took the time to make sure that I understood what he was describing in his class, he was a great man.

Great work both of you. I doubt I have the patience or skill....I'll need to find out some day when I have more time. Thanks for the pics. Walnut is my favorite.
