As we don't own one, I could be wrong, but I consider the MT 55 to be a "finish grade" track saw -- as opposed to, say, the KSS saws.
Does anyone have any reason to believe that Mafell will design and produce a saw that will compete directly with the competition's 70/75mm plunge cut saw (70 on the track/75 off the track)?

Not sure - it would be cool, but doubtful. I use the Festool TS75 because I needed the extra power and depth to cut 8/4 hardwood. I bought this well before I knew what Mafell tools were. The saw has performed well. I would like a smaller saw, though, as it can get tiring all day moving a bigger saw off and on a rail. I really wish the KSS saws allowed for slop adjustment on the rail as that would be a great option for finish work.
I think that Mafell probably did lots of research and found that most users use a track saw for sheet goods and 55mm is adequate for most applications/cuts in this type of material. After using track saws for several years I think that there is some truth in that and Mafell made their saw cut just a little deeper than other saws, especially since the standard blade shipped with the saw is just slightly bigger than other manufacturers getting you over 2 inches on the guide rail.
Just some of my thoughts on this.

I just compared the specifications I could find for both the MT 55 cc and the competition's 55mm plunge cut saw.
Unlike the competition's catalog, Mafell doesn't provide both an on- and off-guide-rail depth of cut specification.
The other guys specify a 50mm/1-15/16" on-guide-rail cut depth. Are you saying, Mr. Tool Junkie, that the MT55 cuts deeper than 2" when mounted on the guide rail?
Thanks for the empirical data ...

Page 30 of the US catalog shows the capacity. The Mafell uses a 162mm blade, giving it extra capacity.Page 17 also lists the cutting depths of every saw at 90 degrees, 30 degrees, 45 degrees and 60 degrees (for those saws that bevel that far).

I dont think Mafell will make a larger plunge saw. With the correct blade I dont see why the 80 or 85 mm saws wouldn't perform equally as well.

I [somehow] glossed of this before ... but thanks for the pointer, Mr. Tool Junkie.
