Well if you talk to the vacuum enthusiasts you'll hear some legitimate criticism about limiting power to 700W. Even if you had the most efficient motor and fan combination you're hitting physical limits as to how much airflow and vacuum pressure can be generated.
In the US vacuums hit the 1.4kW barrier anyways and we've done fine. Some of the 2.xkW vacuums in Europe are a little crazy but on some wide nozzle vacuums it makes sense.
It doesn't help that the law was passed in autocratic manner.

The prices are pretty accurate. I asked for a quote a couple of weeks ago from 3 dealers, 2 in Germany, one in France - around 20 items with tools and accessories - they were within 100 euro of each other. Tobias just quoted the website prices with a couple of slight variations - don't count on getting much cheaper.

I am thinking of importing an Erika 85; what are folks doing as far as wiring given that (I assume) the saw comes with a German style schuko plug? The euro version runs on 230v @ 50hz whereas we run 60 hz @ at 220v. No issues? I was considering just wiring in a schuko plug at 29 amps to a single pole breaker. Thought?

The universal motors do 50 or 60-Hz. You are thinking wisely with the Schuko outlet in your shop. I would suggest a few so that you can move the saw around, or use other Eu tools. The kindergarten solution would be 220 US Male and an Eu Female as an extension cord/cheater. I have a 200mm long one I use for a battery charger as well as a tungsten grinder. I usually test out the new tools with it before doing any 'next step'.

According to the specs the Erika 85 requires only a 14 amp current for a nominal load. Using a 20A breaker seems more than sufficient?

14A would be peak. (Which would be ~28A on 110v).
Joe's regular 220v plug is also good.
-- If you do not want to cut the cord, use a shumko outlet and if you are ok cutting the cord, then throw on a US male end. If you are going to move it around, or have other Eu tools then keeping the Eu end makes sense, as a transformer female takes a male end.
