Yeti: I had to sand down the edge seam on a previous Metabo. It's a hand grater for sure. I have had the orientation changing sound as well, don't remember which drill it was. It wasn't a cheap drill though. It was considered "normal"! I think it was the fan when drilling ghetto style (sideways pistol grip). The trigger catching might break in over time. Or get worse. I agree the feeling isn't Festool-ish in action but after driving larger screws in second gear with my Mafell A18m bl than the T18 struggled with in first gear there is no going back to Festool for outdoor carpentry. Fitting the Festool DC Uni FF depth chuck to the Mafell took care of the shorter screws for decking/panels as the Mafell was a little too fast and less agile in second gear when it comes to "throttling down at the end". The T18 is really nice for medium sized screws though!

I know nothing about plastics. Do I just hit it with sandpaper?

You can either work it with a blade or sharp chisel "standing up" and work it like a card scraper by gripping it low. Or just use a small card scraper.
Either that or use a wet sandpaper (metal sanding paper) with around 400-ish grit and work it wet. Fold down a small piece and rub it down.
Fine grit sandpaper works fine too. You can wet it down as with the "regular" wet-sanding paper if you don't have any at hand.

Sounds good. I've got wet/dry sandpaper coming out of my ears. I need it to clean the rust off of all of the sandvik card scrapers I have never used. Also ran, the LTX-3 is a BEAST.

Update on my Metabo drill.: Yep, Metabo is still junk. :0 The torque/power is there, when I need it, as is torque + speed. 3 speed gearbox is exponentially better than 4 speed.
It is ridiculously loud. The gears are grating in a very nasty way. The battery to housing connection flexes in a rather concerning manner. The bit holding chuck is wobbly as all duck. The three jaw chuck is not as bad as the chuck on my old corded Metabo, but it ain't as good as Festool (both rohm). The housing seam is obnoxious, as is the lack of deburring.
Ergonimically, it is the absolute worst. It hurts like heck. Between the awful 3D textured overmolding and the seams I sanded down... ugh.
But back to the noise. I won't use it without hearing protection anymore. It's really that bad.
All that said, it's still a beast.

Not a big fan of multi-speed gearboxes - two is OK. I have the BE18LTX6 for high speed metal drilling, nice fast drill.
Once several functions start getting combined into one drill, it starts doing all of them less well...

I have reluctantly gone rogue myself as I can't stand the grip any longer on Metabo so Hitachi it is for the time being. Festool T18 and the Hitachi triple hammer impact will be the new standard for me. Festool has had an impact in the pipeline for some time (according to a german Festool rep) and if they release one before I am retired I will get back to Festool for drilling and driving. Reluctantly so but there is no denying ergonomics and comfort in use.

Wish I woulda waited just a little longer and would have seen this. Btw. Which metabo did you get? Thanks Will

LTX BL 3 Quick. You may love it, though. It is powerful, the gear/torque/speed ratio is really well thought out. And, I forgot to mention, if you open up the housing, the internals are really heavy duty. Big wires...SOLDERED connections. Take my opinion with a grain of salt. As much as I have yet to find something I like more than Festool drills, most cordless drills can't match the effortless torque of this Metabo drill. Also ran, plenty of people hate Festool drills. So, that's like, just my opinion man.

Still have it. Still like it! Despite the grip I would add. With gloves on it is borderline too thick for longer periods of use but the grip is "ok".
Overall the A18m is the best drill I have used to date, that does not mean it is my preferred drill for everything but if I need grunt and good precision the Mafell is the be(a)st.
When driving smaller screws/decking screws it is a little big and in second gear it is hard to ease down the screw flush to the surface, once you pause it is far too easy to overdrive the screw. Festool does it better.
For indoor and assembly work I prefer the Festool T18 and CXS as my go-to pairing.

(As an indoor tool) Have you compared the A18 to the Metabo 'Quick-equivalent'?

I know for a fact that Henrik owned both the Mafell and Metabo version of the same drill. That's because I clearly stalk him. I was peeping from the brush when I overheard him say "Oh joy, no droning beepy noise"; which I could hear him say, because there was no droning beepy noise.

(As an indoor tool) Have you compared the A18 to the Metabo 'Quick-equivalent'? Have only manhandled the Mafell A10m. Colleagues have droves of the Metabo impacts and A10m equivalents. They have burned out a few of the A10m equivalents. They are a bit stronger than the CXS I use but can obviously be toasted. Grip is not to my liking though it isn't large per se, just awkward shape. I like the little Mafell as such and if the CXS wasn't on the market I probably would have one or two of them. I did burn out a CXS myself and a second one started smelling funky. As Yetihunter was rustling around in the bushes (thought I heard a noise - glad I am not paranoid!) I did run the A18m against the Metabo equivalent. Mafell grip is smoother with a different overmold and nicer than the Metabo grip though - again - a little thick for my hands and not very comfortable with gloves. The machine itself is a beast and with them 3,5LiHD actually quite nimble in action. I keep chasing my tail for the perfect drill but I have more or less given up on the quest so instead I have a bundle of them in rotation. If it wasn't for the fact I like Centrotec drills and countersinks I would go Hitachi. Mafell gives the best of both with some Centrotec compatibility and angle attachments and removable chuck. Things can go south quickly. Gimme a Festool Impact that is on par with the Metabo and I might ditch'em all but would keep Hitachi for decking and outdoor use. Mafell/Metabo for all sawing and grinding is a working solution so pretty pleased with that. I do consider taking the drilling task out of that equation and separate it. The day Elon Musk accidentally transfers his R&D fund to me I will give you THE PERFECT PLATFORM. Just send me your moldings of your palms/hands and I will customize grips for each and every one of you. In the mean time I will keep bitching and moaning.

And since everyone is biting their nails in anticipation: I came around to the Metabo BS 18 LTX-3 BL Q I I like it now.
