Interested , have no use for 1/4 inch plywood , to weak to add strength to a cabinet and is a joke for installing cabinets . If a 1/2 inch skinny cutter could be made .....all over it !!!

I too have the same problem as we wish the groove out 10mm on our teak decking to apply sika flex however after reading all the great comments i have asked our onboard engineers to mill this cutter head down to 10mm from 15.4mm I also notice we would need to replace the reduced width with more spacers. I will let you know the outcome. A more simply approach would be for Macfell to produce a smaller cutter head !!

I wonder if it’s possible to use a reducing bushing of some sort. I know that ‘top hat’ bushings are often used with spindle moulders to reduce bore sizes from say 40mm to 1.25” E.g. www.whitehill-tools.com/catalogue.php?cid=3&c2id=115The problem is that a 20mm bore is a wierd size for a spindle cutter, so people don’t make top hats that go to that size. So wouldn’t it be more cost effective and versatile to commision a 30 to 20 top hat bushing? This would allow us to use any number of cutters.

I've received a quotation from Leitz as follows. I'm sure you're all familiar with Leitz and their reputation is reflected in the prices I've received.
_Prices_______________________________________
6mm i.e. 1/4 inch groove cutter £355 + £71 VAT* = £426
12mm i.e. 1/2 inch groove cutter £396 + £79 VAT = £475
_Notes________________________________________
*The VAT (20%) may not be applicable to your purchase depending on country of origin.
The above are with a diameter of 125mm and a bore of 20mm
Postage and Packaging is not included.
If 'crowd sourced' there is a 5% discount for each type when buying 5 or more.
The quote is valid for 1 month from today.
Lead time is 6-8 working weeks from confirmation of production drawings.
If you PM me I'll send you a PDF of the quote with the contact details so you can arrange your own.
I'm also waiting for a quote from Whiteside tooling.

just curious, has mafell been contacted before and declined? Good question - I came to this thread late and assumed that to be the case. Anyone?

Though it only cuts to 11m depth the Makita CA5000XJ groove cutter is fairly cheap, then pointing out to Makita that if they asked their Chinese blade vendor to make some dado cut versions they could expand the market for this saw (or just find out who makes their blades and see what their 'premium' minimum is for what you all agree on - blade maker won't care if you wave cash). After that you either use festool/makita track or cut a bosch/mafell slot in bottom of Makita base. Maybe float what you guys are up to on a few other forums too and see if you can build a bigger bank roll.

I’ve got quotes in from both Leitz and Whitehill. These are for 6mm and 12mm cutters, with a 20mm bore and a 120mm diameter.
Both companies have offered a discount for 5+ units NB: I am showing prices inclusive of 20% VAT (tax) but excluding delivery. You’ll need to work out how these apply to you, but bear in mind that if we’re doing a 5+ deal they may expect it to be paid in one go.
Leitz 6mm cutter
1 unit £415 5+ £394
Whitehill 6mm cutter
1 unit £297 5+ £237
Leitz 12mm cutter
1 unit £465 5+ £442
Whitehill 12mm cutter
1 unit £273 5+ £201

Okay... Two manufacturers , Leitz and Whitehill, have said they can produce a fixed width cutter (D =120mm, B=20mm, W=6 or 12mm) - see my previous post in this thread for prices. Just yesterday I contacted an additional producer, Wealden, who make an groove cutter which is adjustable from 4mm to 15mm - this is practically perfect for covering the range narrower than the 15.4mm - 25mm standard MF-VN 25 cutter. See link to Wealden adjustable groove cutterThe gotcha is that it has a standard 30mm bore. I'll see what they come back with. If they can't machine it to a 20mm bore, they might at least be able to provide a 30mm to 20mm reducing bush. I'm keeping my fingers crossed about this adjustable groove cutter. Given the variability of sheet thicknesses, adjustable is the way to go. Also the manufacturer Wealden Tools have a good reputation here, I've already got a few of their router cutters. So far I've got just one confirmed buyer plus myself, so not much going on there. Hopefully there'll be more interest if this adjustable option bears fruit. Regards, Mark
