Holmz, in my above warning about the speed was not a call to not use the grinder, just be aware it eats faster due to its higher rotational speed. I've used my 4 1/2" grinder to cope, it works; its dusty. The RAS has benefits, but I too would not buy it just for coping. The Collins works well, another option to how to accomplish a goal.

I never thought of a grinder or sander till the RAS was mentioned. (I've bnen trying to justify a belt sander for a while, and a RAS looks useful too)
I always did the 45 degree cut, and then a hand powered coping saw, and sometimes a rat tail file for odd shapes that needed a clean up in a pointy corner.

In the interest of doing things in various ways, an air powered die grinder would work too.
So would a 90 degree drill with a 3" sanding disc, getting into the lower range of the RAS.
All depends on what's in the tool box.

When you try the grinder or or Ras , you won't go back . Trust me. The nice thing about the Ras over a grinder , it had dust collection capability. I use it on full speed with a 40 or 60 grit disc. No more tedious coping. When you see how tight you can make them , it's actually fun:)

I should add that the RAS also makes for a great scribing tool for base or fillers. Was easier to control and see your work then a belt sander. Faster too.

As a follow up to the thread: I did get the RAS 115 and it did a great job for coping and scribing. It all went really smooth and I am thankful for the suggestion. I even got a Collins Coping foot for the Metabo STA 18LTX but when I needed it to do a coping cut I realized I never put it in the systainer... ...arrrrghh. Went well without it but I can definitely say that the Coping Foot would have helped. Now the Coping foot is in the Systainer with the Metabo jigsaw but I haven't any coping cuts coming up that I know of. Typical.
