I've been thinking about this a wee bit and how best to approach design testing and manufacture of community based designs for jigs and attachments. Let me know what you guys think about a formula similar to this...
A proposal can be posted by a member in the forum.
If enough interest is generated other members can sign on to contribute ideas, drawings, manufacture.
once a prototype is developed, a scheduled testing period should be considered for group members, shipping costs should be calculated and divided amongst the group evenly, the prototype is then passed around to selected group participants for testing.
This process can repeat if changes to the prototype are necessary.
Once a design is finalized and production costs are agreed upon an initial order can go through to manufacture.
This is where it can get tricky and all can go to hell if we're not careful. We would need to establish what financial contributions group members have made to the project and the group must understand that production may come with no financial return. If there is income generated off a design that income should first be used to recoup financial contributions of design group members. in an ideal situation all financial contributors would break even. If a profit is generated a certain percentage should go towards the funding of a further project. The group must come to an agreement on what members contributions are worth percentage wise, be it design contributions, financial, or organising manufacture and distribution. This is to determine financial return, if any, beyond the previous two stages or if the website were to go under for some reason and there is still money held in trust for further design projects that can no longer be undertaken.
The absolute last thing I would ever want is for people to end up squabbling over money on one of these things.
This site is developed free of financial contribution so as to make it as unbiased as possible. It has never been the intention to derive some sort of profit off of this, only to create a forum of discussion.
The idea of group design and development is exciting but the last thing I would ever want is for someone to feel ripped off in the process.
On a side note, this web forum has the ability to create sub forums which only chosen members can view, so if during the design process the group wishes to keep their ideas private to the group, it can be done.
Your feed back and thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated. Consider this format a proposal only until our forum can mutually agree on a set of guidelines for group design and manufacture.
