I am a little intrigued by the new Makita 40V platform.
I am not a potential customer myself but I am trying to wrap my head around the concept, so to speak.
I would be more thrilled with it if they went with backwards/18V gear compatibility (like Hikoki Multivolt) but as it seems they have started to make a 40V line that will probably replace the dual battery 18V range with single battery 40V machines as well as simply releasing some existing 18V gear tweaked for the new batteries. Or am I wrong?
Charger is compatible with 18V via a chunky adapter but it seems a bit awkward.
I root for Makita and I think their subcompact and compact lines make sense (10.8/12V machines appearing as lighter 18V models too) and I fully get the need for 18V dual battery solutions - but what do you guys think of the new 40V platform?
Any takers?

With DeWalt doing the Flexvolt, Hikoki doing Multivolt - it seems they felt they had to respond - but it's weird response!
I have pretty much all the 10,8v range (that they've decided to rename 12v?.. is it 10,8v or 12v?..) - it is powerful enough for most of my work, and I can get sooo many tools in a sys4. 18v are my heavier duty construction tools, and the 2x 18v is a logical step - I already have the batts and chargers... I have quite a lot of the 2x 18v range.
But if I have to go for ANOTHER battery platform, Makita are on the same level as the competition - I'm going to look elsewhere and maybe I'll be 'unfaithful'... there will have to be something 'really' special to make an existing customer go for this...
Otherwise, it could be the first nail in the 18v coffin!
