Those are certainly better prices.
Although I found an even cheaper option. CMT makes a boring bit in the right length(57.5mm) but only in 10mm shanks. I talked with a local machinist and he can turn the bits to 8mm. The only negative I can see is the cutting length will be less by 3-4mm with the CMT. The Mafell bits have a shorter shank and longer cut length but for most uses I don't need the full 40mm depth. Will be perfect for anything other then an 80mm long pin.
The nice thing about this option is I can get CMT bits in all kinds of sizes that Mafell doesn't offer including English sizes.

After looking things over the CMT bits would only restrict depth if less then 8mm in size. Anything Larger and the shank won't get in the way.

Were there any CMT part numbers? There are a couple of dealers in the US that can get metric-sized bits for CMT with no issue.

The size issue is shank to Over All Length. CMT doesn't make an 8mm shank with an OAL at 58mm.

Check this out. www.cmtutensili.es/show_items.asp?pars=TB~312%20HW~2From what I gather, shank 8mm and oal 58mm designed for Mafell by CMT. 4mm thru 16. Please let me know if I'm missing something. i will be checking in with my local cmt dealer before long to see if these are available through him. I have two 16mm drills on back order with timberwolf at around $97 each. Indeed a bit pricey.

Please keep everyone posted on this. I am seriously considering the Duo-Doweler.

Although now I can just buy the 10mm shank in 58mm lengths and have the shank turned to 8mm. It also gives me more options in sizes and some in imperial. Last I checked I can get the 16mm finished for about $30 each.

That should work. Only thing is the length is 2mm shorter but is irrelevant depending on if you need the full length cut.

With the expense of the Mafell bits and the limited metric pins in NA, I'm wondering if I should buy imperial sizes bits with 1/2 shank and get them milled to 8mm. I'd have better options for pins and even with the milling required, I'd still save money on bits. Jalvis, I saw your post with the pvc biscuits. I've actually been looking for pvc pins. So far I've only found imperial sizes, which is partly driving this idea. I don't have a biscuit jointer.

Im doing exactly as you described and will report back on the outcome. I ordered some imperial sizes 1/4, 3/8, and 1/2. My machinist will mill the shank and I will have some more common sizes. My interest was in part by Laurier Dowels which are very limited in Metric sizes.

If we can't get the 312 series, another option would be to get the 307 series and cut the shank. That would make nearly an identical bit and wouldn't take special tools. 10mm 40mm 67mm 8x20mm RH 307.100.11
