Thanks for taking the trouble wrightwoodwork. I've really looked at it from every nook and cranny i could find but there's no blockages. And I can't imagine how I'd already have a blockage somewhere after cutting 1 sheet of MDF. Maybe it's because i taped off the blade change hole in front of the arbor? I'll try the same test again tomorrow without the tape. I'm thinking there's some differences in design between the 85 and 70. Maybe the smaller diameter blade has a smaller blade shroud and because of that less suction gets lost and that's why you get better perfomance? In any case, I'll keep searching for a solution for sure though! Also mess about with different blade heights

uggh, you made me crawl under and look again. First off your dust shroud look much different, may be a 70 vs 85 thing.
I tried a number of combos and settled on a 50 mm festool hose. and that will work well enough for me and it seems to fit fine without any tape. On an older post from Heiko he mentioned some disatisfaction with t he dust control and put some tape behind the riving knife..............http://holzwerkerblog.de/2014/01/09/erster-einsatz-der-neuen-erika-85/ I also have not done this but living in a desert I get more dust just by opening the garage door.

First , congratulations on the saw. It 's just so good and very stable and accurate . see here about dust , Heiko website : http : //holzwerkerblog.de/2014/01/09/erster-einsatz-der-neuen-erika-85/ How do you get images inserted ? Excuse my poor written English, but my Danish is perfect ; o) You insert "the link" to the picture, rather than the actual picture. Usually the pictures end in .jpg And many people upload the pictures to Flickr or similar.

Thanks for tipped, but I am not on twitter, facebook etc. and does not have a web album with pictures like flick or similar. I am an old Viking, kidding myself into thinking that I can easily live without.
Exciting reading with how to reduce the impact of dust using mafells Erika

After using the Erika all day in my normal work flow for trimming and flooring install im in love. The utility it brings is insane. I used to have to use my track saw for all my rips as i only had a cabinet saw at home and couldn't always run home to use it. So right there the Erika has helped a lot but what really came in useful is having a second cross cutting machine. I needed to find and set a silly angle for my hardwood to die into a tile threshold ( like 16.4* or something dumb). Once i dialed it in i wasn't changing the setting on the kapex but I was able to leave it and bounce the Erika back and forth between ripping and cross cutting until i got past the threshold. It might sound simple but that is so useful and a pleasure to use.
I'm still getting used to how to set the Erika up for each cut and how to flow my work around it but I can already see it being my most used tool by far. To be fair it is not good AT ALL on dust extraction. It won't get setup inside the house unless its raining but does that truly matter or does the functionality and ease of use completely negate the dust? For me I'll clean up later and walk a few extra feet to get outside. A lot of the time its obnoxious to swing around 16' lengths inside a building anyway so that makes up the decision right there.

Very hard to stop that cloud of dust at the riving knife/back of the blade. When the shroud is attached to the knife, like it is on the Erika, it's never big enough to catch the dust being thrown up. The panel saw I use at work has an independent shroud over the blade - ie. not attached to the riving knife. This allows it to extend a lot further - 200mm at the front and back of the blade. It also has a 3HP twin bag extractor, with a 100m hose to the shroud and one under the saw. This set up still doesn't catch all the dust at the riving knife. You'll never catch all dust, just minimise it.
Great looking saw Jonathan, love how smooth the pull function appears to be.

I'm going to see if I can take the blade shroud apart and have a look inside. Maybe there's something to be done in there.

Hi guys,
As you know I've been doing some testing and fiddling around with the Erika 85 dust collection. And I'm happy to share a very simple modification that significantly reduces the dust that gets blown back out at the riving knife.
It's a small piece of left over EPDM rubber which I simply cut into a little bristle of sorts and taped it to the back of the blade shroud.
This reduces the opening at the riving knife. I cut it into 3-4mm wide bristles of sorts which makes them conform to the riving knife being raised/lowered.
Here's 2 videos showing the dust being blown out:
1st video is straight out of the box, without the modification. 2nd video shows with the modification.
Both times the dust extractor setup is a single Protool VCP-260 E-L-AC with 1m long 50mm hose going to the provided Y-fitting and the standard grey hose going from the Y-fitting to the blade guard at the top of the table.
I think with some further fiddling and fine-tuning I can improve it even more...

Hey Guys, new here.......and a proud 85 owner since a couple of days from The Netherlands. What an awesome saw!!! i just read some of the dustcollection-solutions on this board, unfortunately i still have some questions. i own a Festool CTL26E and want to use this on the 85. How do i put the 50mm hose on the CTL26 so i can use that 1m short hose on the 85-Y-piece?? Does that 50mm hose fit on my CTL without further adapting anything? i cant see to understand how i best do this. www.festool.nl/Products/Accessoires/Pages/Detail.aspx?pid=452386&name=Afzuigslang-antistatisch-D-50-MW-ASi gladly appreciate any help. thanks in advance. Hi maartennl, In the frist post, just around halfway through, you can see how you can connect your 50mm hose to the Erika. you'll just need a little bit of tape to make it a snug fit.

I've redone the little modification in a cleaner way and made another test cut. This time I added a larger dark background and put some light on it to better see any dust escaping.
I'm very happy with this one as I can't see anything escaping at the riving knife anymore.
There is however a lot of dust being blown out at the front, so I'm going to try a few things there and see if I can get any results.
So far though, it's already a big improvement!

Edit: this is with a single vacuum.
To be continued...
