Here are a couple of photos showing 6x10 doug fir rafter tails cut with the Z5. I'll have to try and locate some video to upload.

Thats less than 20% off for a used tool. For the that difference I will buy new.
Wish one of these bad boys was in view for me in the future. Lots would have to change before that day.

Agreed! Especially with costly tool purchases, new is the only way to go.

I will buy used but only if I can see the item and owner. I typically end up at 50% of new or better depending on the item.

Garch- I noticed in your second picture in this thread mafell-users-forum.freeforums.net/attachment/download/361 you show the festool planer. It looks like you planed the beams using the custom blade to get the pattern/texture on the timbers. If true- I have a couple questions 1- how do you like the festool planer? is it the larger 850 model? 2- how do you like the "wavy blade", is it fast with good results? or does it create a fake/predictable pattern without additional time consuming work?

We have a couple of the hl850's and yes they are very nice as you would expect. We have three cutter heads for them, I believe that's all festool offers. The actual wavy or undulating cutter did not work well for our application so we used the cutter head that has one curvature end to end. The learning curve for creating a pleasing and random pattern is very steep and I'd assume you would have to be willing to devote a full day or two to become proficient. Makita makes a planer suited for this work also. I wouldn't bother attempting this on a small project, you wouldn't get paid enough for tool expense (cutter heads were very expensive) and frustration. We did 29 - 38' span trusses and 100 - 14' single rafters and many miscellaneous valley and hip components. Something to say for festool durability.

Makes sense about what you say, Jalvis. I'm sure the ebay item won't sell at that price though..

Thats an impressive amount of beam work.
I have a larger Makita planer and considered making curved blades for it. Do you know which Makita planer does the same thing? Maybe I can just buy knives rather than build my own.

I'll do my best to remember to get a few pictures and useful information from him when I am at his shop next and post it for you.
