As I mentioned in the other thread, I sent my saw back to Germany. It all of a sudden stopped working. No burn out, no 'beeping', nothing. Tried the batteries in my other saw and they work fine. Thought it was either a trigger or electrical problem.
Mafell have looked at it and told me that there's nothing wrong with it. I didn't send the battery with it, to lessen the postage weight - they are saying that it must be a battery problem. Can a battery work in one tool, but not another?? I've been using Metabo batteries and I did notice a while ago that they discontinued the ones I have, not that long after they were introduced.
I've taken a (financial!) risk and ordered a Mafell battery and charger, which I was going to do anyway, eventually. Maybe the Metabo batteries are the problem, in this case?
Any opinions on this?

That would throw the whole 'Cordless Alliance System' out of the window... Mafell have signed up to this, their tools should work with any battery from the CAS. Mafell don't make batteries or chargers, they are Metabo batteries and chargers.

I agree aas, and the batteries were fine for the past year I've had them and the saw. So the only other option is, there is something wrong with the saw and they couldn't be bothered checking it properly. Or there's something wrong with the batteries that only affects the KSS40 and not my KSP55??? I'd like to know why the original 8ah Metabo batteries were pulled. Was there a problem with them? I notice their replacements look different and feature the 'CAS' symbol.

If it worked with that particular battery before… An intermittent connection that could could be temperature sensitive or pressure sensitive via climate change or plane ride? Contact inhibiting debris that got knocked loose during shipping? Mafell choosing to spin their remedy, becoming more social media aware, of an issue that’s increasingly beginning to show up and they don’t want to be deluged with concerns?
May not have ever fixed itself if you hadn’t sent it in. But if it works with same batt when it comes back then the simplest explanation ‘might’ be the battery contacts on the saw (or batt) had some debris or film insulating contact. Could be standard practice for mafell to brush or spray them before beginning any testing and if it works they stop there (?)

On my KSS40, my observations are as follows: -- When I overload the tool, it automatically shuts itself off and beeps, indicating the shut-down -- The tool goes through some kind of "cool-down" period, during which sometimes it beeps, other times is just "dead" -- The degree to which I overloaded the tool seems to inform the cool-down period. For instance, a quick/light overload/bind will result in a quick cool-down, whereas a intense/heavy overload, or a quick repeated overload seems to result in a longer "lock-out"/cool-down period
I realize that the above info isn't directly applicable to your situation, other than to say in the longer "lock-out" periods I've become concerned that the tool was really fried. No beep, no nothing. After letting the tool cool down for up to a full minute seems to allow the tool to refresh itself, at least for me.
For reference, I'm using Metabo 6.2Ah on my KSS40.
Lincoln, it sounds like you observed a longer period with still no response, so my input may be mute. As Kraftt points out, it's possible that the process of inspecting the tool may have resolved the issue. Also, there's the scenario where a fix WAS executed, but they are choosing to simply say that the tool is fine now. Either way, I hope your tool works when it arrives back to you.

... I forgot all about the lock out / beeping Tom mentions. That makes a lot of sense if that thermistor (or something similar to a thermal protect) finally gave up or just couldn't pop back into position. Out of curiosity I looked at the parts diagram wondering if any kind of overload sensor etc. was connected by leads to a pcb that could be user replaced. It seems there is one part number for the two modules shown. I also see what looks like a ribbon cable but I'm unsure what it connects to because it has a JST end connector and that doesn't seem robust enough to connect to the motor (but it could I suppose). Then I see what looks like solid metal spring wire that maybe clips around the motor to conduct heat back to module(?). Although they could be depicting two lead wires for motor too(?) The upshot is that if they will sell this part (pre-programmed) then at least any out of warrantee diy repairs involving the electronics should be fairly straight forward because this appears to be the whole show.

Strange problem and a slight cause for concern. I am on my second KSS40 (third if you count one replacement). I don't think there is a battery brand issue since Mafell batteries are essentially Metabo batteries though I wonder what part the electronics play in this. Intermittent problems could perhaps be due to one of your batteries not giving the "right" feedback to the electronics or simply a slight anomaly in the battery itself causing the very same issue.
Overload protection not working properly is something to suspect but in my case the saw was on no way strained so "overload" it wasn't. Trigger was pulled with the machine free from any surface, straight out of the box and with a fully charged battery.
Even though my experience with Mafell repairs is slim (out of warranty) I would say that for that one time they fixed my old 2006 DD40G (short circuit electronics board) it was at a surprisingly reasonable cost. Part ordered from Germany and fixed by a repair shop I know well. I have had four or even five warranty issues with Mafell which can be interpreted as a very high number considering I don't have that many Mafell tools but that includes small (but annoying) things as well as faulty electronics. So far the dealership and Mafell has come through on every occasion.

Update: the saw came back, I charged the Mafell batteries and loaded one in the saw...nothing. Same problem. Sent an email to the dealer, with a short video of me loading the charged, new battery and pulling the trigger. After I sent the video I picked up the saw to put it back in the sys and gave the trigger a pull - it worked. Hasn't missed a beat since. Have tried the Metabo batteties again and they are working with saw again. Very confusing.

Worked before with same batts. Worked for mafell with their batts. Works again with same batts. Gotta think trigger switch (hopefully working towards improving contact). If it stops again you could try bypassing / shorting trigger to see if that powers motor on.

I second what Kraft says. Dirty trigger maybe, don't know if they're sealed or not. Blast of air, electrical contact cleaner. Let us know.

I blew up my kss40 motor on 3rd day. sent it back and replaced. I get 2beeps when I hit 2bars on batteries. And on the occasional binding of blade I give it clean and lubes every day. It's been making over 1000cuts a week on trex decking.

So, the saw stopped working again, not long after my last post on this, last March. After leaving it on the shelf for the rest of the year, I ended up reaching out to a dealer in the UK and they agreed to take a look at it. I sent it to them and they said they couldn't replicate the problem. I insisted that there was a problem, so they said my choices were a motor replacement, a PCB replacement, or both. I opted for the PCB replacement because it felt like an electronic issue more than a motor issue. The saw got back to me yesterday and the problem is fixed. Gave it a solid workout last night, no problem at all. I've really missed it! If the problem wasn't fixed, I think I would have bought another one, despite my bad experience.

Yes it's a great saw - I get the beeping a lot, but I too would buy another if it stopped working.

Same here. I am bracing for that moment when it goes bleep bleep again but up until then I have so much use for the KSS40.

So, after all the above issues, then the fix, I encountered the dreaded 'beep-beep' last week. Can't get it going, looks like it's cooked. Unfortunately it's time to pack it up, put it in a cupboard and forget about it.
