I have always used a Router table for that task. Although I have seen guys cut it that way with a jig that fits both sides of the piece being routed.

That would be my choice top to use a router table but thinking of getting the table extension for the erika next year and the other thing I thinking is to get an arbor for the router and to use slot cutter to do the grooves as i think it will be more effective at remove the waste more like the way a spindle moulder would remove the waste when grooving

The DD40 I believe has a maximum size of 16 mm

I know this was touched on a bit on the FOG... but is it normally that difficult to plunge the DD40?

it's not normally that difficult bit the 16mm cutters do take a bit a push plus they are getting slightly blunt I have noticed if you give a gradual push so the waste clears then it seems a lot harder, but if you give a quick sharp push it goes in easier but the waste dos nt clear quick enough. Where as the dommino I think clears the waste better

ahh the kitchen counter work table, been there so many times. the Domino doesn't offer anything 16mm thick if I'm not mistaken. I have the smaller version of the domino and you have to take your time with the plunges on that or i find it starts to hop around, it does leave a spotless mortise though
